Valentine’s day is approaching and the Dominican Learning Resource Center – College library wanted to know what students, faculty members and staff of St. Dominic College of Asia feels about the library. So here, we asked these library users what they love about the library.

Dominicans once again proved their journalistic skills as they bagged 10 places in the recently concluded Bacoor City Division Schools Press Conference (DSPC) 2018, with the theme “21st Century Journalists: Vanguards of Truth and Change”, at Bacoor National High School-Main Campus, September 14-15.

The Division Schools Press Conference is an annual competition in pursuant to the Campus Journalism Act of 1991, that aims to demonstrate understanding of the importance of journalism, sustain social consciousness, and enhance the learning experience of student-writers and teacher-advisers through friendly journalistic competition.

Out of more than thirty school participants in the competition, St. Dominic College of Asia (SDCA) was able to take home ten awards in different categories. Three students won first places topping their respective categories; Jutine Caye Magnayon, Photojournalism - Filipino (Elementary), Sophia Lorraine Pagliawan, Editorial Writing – English (Secondary) and Roland John Alegre, Sports writing - Filipino (Secondary).

Other winners for the elementary level were; Andrea Bernadette Mendoza, Feature Writing- English (Second Place) and Reina Alysa Kalugdan, Editorial Writing – English (Third Place).

Moreover, for the secondary level, other Dominican winners were: Isabelle Barona, News Writing- English (Second Place) and Zyrille Raphael Marito, Sports Writing (Fourth Place).

On June 13, representatives from the Nagasaki International University (NIU) and Nagasaki Junior College (NJC) in Japan arrived at St. Dominic College of Asia (SDCA) for an official visit which was highlighted by a partnership renewal signing between the two institutions.

SDCA and NIU/NJC have started a partnership in 2016 which allowed educational collaborations and exchanges between the institutions. In that same year, NIU sent sixteen (16) students to SDCA to take an English Proficiency program. SDCA administrators, instructors, and students, on the other hand, were offered to be welcomed at NIU and NJC for educational visits or internships. This 2017, with the partnership renewed another batch of Nagasaki students will stay at SDCA for the same English program.

The Nagasaki delegation was led by the Mr. Takaoki Mizogoshi, Manager of Nagasaki Junior College. He was joined by Mr. Norihito Fujishima, NJC Associate Professor of Early Childhood Education and Social Welfare Department; Mr. Kazuyuki Tzukahara, Chief of NIU’s International Center; and Mr. Hitoshi Kato, CEO of JP Talk Inc. which serves as coordinating office between the Philippine and Japanese educational institutions. SDCA, on the other hand, was represented by Dr. Gregorio A. Andaman Jr., President); Dr. Marita Andaman-Rillo, Chairperson of the Board; Dr. Nilda W. Balsicas, Vice President for Academics and Research; and Dr. Carolina P. Danao, Quality Assurance and Institutional Planning Officer.

Dr. Andaman expressed his excitement about the partnership. Both SDCA and Nagasaki delegation heads are optimistic that the collaboration will open bigger doors for mutual cooperation.

SDCA Wins at MAFBEX 2017

St. Dominic College of Asia gained various awards in the 49th Young Hoteliers' Exposition of the 11th MANILA FOOD AND BEVERAGES EXPOSITION (MAFBEX), held at the Philippine World Trade Center, on June 14-18.

Selected students from the Hospitality Management and Workskills International courses, under the School of Hospitality and Tourism Management (SIHTM), showcased their skills in the competition’s 5 Categories: Table Set-Up and Napkin Folding competition, Mocktail Punch competition, Cake Decorating competition, Market Basket competition, and Clash of Kitchens.

The Champions in the Table Set-Up and Napkin Folding competition were James Carl R. Del Mundo, Giana Ray D. Barrios, Elisha Joyce DA. Ramos, and Cornelio P. Aguilar Jr., mentored by TECHVOC Officer and OIC Dean Melbert V. Animas.

Meanwhile, Kenneth A. Estolano, Francis Erick Delos Santos, Roselyn B. Tuico won Bronze in the Mocktail Punch Competition, accompanied by their coaches Prof. Christian O. Sidiangco and Mr. Rolando S. Poblete.

Joy-Mae C. Masicampo, Irene M. Moreno, Danica A. Padua, Hollygain S. Monterey and Marilou S. Aranzazu jointed the Cake Decorating competition under the guidance of their mentor, OIC Dean and HM Program Chair Jennefer Y. Yap. Junee Bonifacio, Earl Sabido, and Eliza Cruz competed for Market Basket competition, while Ivan Anjelo V. Panzo, August A. Abel, Kasmir Justine V. De Las Alas, and Joshua Shane P. Co entered the Clash of Kitchen segment. WSI Culinary Instructor, Chef Edgardo B. Encinas, mentored this teams for both categories.

A school-wide event, the Young Hoteliers' Exposition creates opportunities for aspiring hoteliers and restaurateurs to showcase their talents and skills in culinary arts, hospitality and the tourism industry. The theme for this year, Hollyfood: “Blazing and Stunning”, intends to showcase the various Hollywood genres in the craft of this industry.

St. Dominic College of Asia received a Plaque of Recognition from the Municipality of Maragondon, last June 12.

Alongside with the Municipality’s celebration of their “Ika-119 na Taon ng Pagdiriwang ng Kalayaan” with its theme, “Kalayaan 2017: PagbabagongSama-samangBalikatin,” SDCA was given a plaque of recognition as an act of appreciation for its excellence in supporting the Maragondonians through charities, educational, medical and social service programs to ensure the welfare of the people of Maragondon.

The Vice Mayor of Maragondon, Cavite, Mr. Ireneo C. Angeles, began the ceremony by giving his opening remarks. It was then followed by a message from their Mayor, himself, Mr. Reynaldo A. Rillo. In his speech, Mayor Rillo also introduced their guest of honor, the Chairman of St. Dominic College Asia, Dr. Marita A. Rillo and honor all her contributions for the development of her home town, Maragondon.

Dr. Marita A. Rillo also gave a speech which was mainly focused on her respect towards the Municipality of Maragondon, Cavite and its people, she also took this opportunity to commemorate our Independence Day and show her concern about the occurrences in our country.After that, they proceeded withthe highlight of the celebration which was the awarding of the Plaque of Recognition that serves as an act of appreciation for its deserving recipients to acknowledge their excellence in supporting the Maragondonians through charities, educational, medical and social service programs to ensure the welfare of the people of Maragondon. Prof. Ronald C, Tomines, the Community Outreach and Extension Officer was the one who accepted the award in behalf of St. Dominic College of Asia.

Aside from St. Dominic College of Asia, Saint Jude Band, Primero Uno Band,Nuestra Senora Dela Paz and Maestro Jose Malan Angeles received their Plaque of Recognition as well.

The occasion was attended by our very own, Prof. Christian Tu, the Program Chair for the Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Ms. Ianne Kristine Lopez.

After a brief intermission number from Ms, Christine Joy Pareja, the Chairman of SB Committee on Tourism concluded the convocation with his closing remarks.

St. Dominic College of Asia facilitated St. Anne College and Workskills International’s partnership.

Last June 13, SDCA welcomed the Managing Director for Workskills International, Ms. Christine Williamson and some of the professors from St. Anne College, namely, Prof. Gerry T. Gavilan (Assistant Dean of ITHMT), Prof. Rose P. De Guzman (College Registrar), Professor Lalaine P. Manlangit (Dean of CBITE), and Prof. Raul Capisinda (Executive Assistant to the President). The conference was held at the Luigi’s Bar, located at the 4th floor of SDCA. The gathering was also attended by Dr. Gregorio A. Andaman Jr. (SDCA President), Ms. Teresita Andaman (Deputy Quality Management Representative), Prof. Rolando Poblete (Assessment Center Manager), Engr. Bernardita Escuril (College Registrar), Prof. Jennifer Yap (Program Chair for SIHTM), Chef Edgar B. Encinas (Special Lecturer).

The forum catered the discussion about the implementation of the Workskills International’s culinary class in the curriculum of the Bachelor of Science in Hotel Management program offered by St. Anne College. The culinary class was already a stand-alone course in SDCA, thus, with SDCA’s good alliance with Workskills International, they figured that it is only quite fitting that our sister school, St. Anne College, should be the next one to administer the said class.

Chef Edgardo B. Encinas preceded the assemblage with a presentation consists of photographs from their past events. After that, Ms. Christine Williamson discussed how the Filipinos’ hospitality is one of the main reasons why their organization chose our country to aid them in their advocacy. She did also shed light on the issue of high unemployment rate in Asian countries such as China and Japan. She then conferred their company’s aim to extend their support in the struggles of such countries by providing accessible employment programs.

Moreover, Williamson, subsequently proceeded into a discourse about the training programs that they offer. She also shared some anecdotes and testimonies from the experiences of the past participants of their training programs. To further elaborate her organization’s intentions, she showed their official website, training.gov.au, and went over the requirements and other necessary information about their program.

After her detailed confab about the program, Williamson answered questions from some of the professors from Saint Anne College.

Both Workskills International Managing Director, Christine Williamson and the professors of St. Anne College agreed that their partnership still has a long way to go.  Williamson, nevertheless, concluded the meeting by showing the certificate that they will be giving to the students once the program was properly instigated.

SDCA-BED Joins Annual Freedom Rites

HONOR. Dominican student leaders led by the Supreme Student Council (SSC) during

the wreath-laying ceremony at the tomb of former President Emilio Aguinaldo during the

celebration of the 119th Philippine Independence Day in Kawit, Cavite, June 12.

"Masarap maging Pilipino."

This was the message of the guest of honor, Sen. Panfilo “Ping” Lacson in the commemoration of the 119th anniversary of the Philippines Independence, at the Aguinaldo Shrine Kawit, Cavite, June 12.

Thirty-eight Dominicans consisting of 30 student leaders and eight faculty members represented the school in the socio-civic parade, flag raising and wreath-laying ceremonies in the historic Aguinaldo Shrine.

The natural born Caviteno senator conveyed with utmost sincerity about how much the Filipino people wanted freedom and what freedom returned and did for its people in his speech.

Showing gratitude, he calmly remarked “ang mga makabagong katipunero ng Pilipinas,” thanking the PNP officers, guests, and all Filipinos living and enjoying the benefits of the country’s independence.

In addition, Sen. Lacson’s shared his realization that lead him to asking the people, “may pagbabago ba? Kapag sinabi na wala, ang susunod na tanong ay bakit?” he added.

Cinque Terre

“Malaya na tayo sa madilim nating kahapon, ngunit hindi ito nangangahulugang nakaungos na tayo sa paninindak sa ating inang bayan,” he answered the question every Filipino wanted to know.

He also mentioned about poverty and the war that broke out two weeks in Marawi City. He said that poverty and lack of peace is what locks us and prevents us to be truly free.

“Kapag ang pinuno ay naiiba sa mga nauna sakanya, mas may magandang pagkakataon magkaroon ng pag-asa at pagbabago,” he explained.

“Subali’t ako ang pangunahing tagapagsalita, kaya kahit pansamantala, wala kayong magagawa kundi dinggin ang aking pananalita,” he added.

He also said that the world saw the camaraderie of Filipinos helping each other to obtain freedom for all and ended in a good way.

To end his speech he acclaimed how colorful the Filipino history is, with its beautiful landscape and three Filipino virtues our parents thought us that led Sen. Lacson to say “Masarapmaging Pilipino.”

On the other hand, selected Dominican Scouts were also invited at the flag raising ceremony of the SM City Bacoor for the mall’s Independence Day program.

St. Dominic College of Asia hosted the first kinder parent’s orientation year  in the  Dominga Andaman hall.

The Basic Education principal Ms. Ma. Arlene V. Coronado opened the event with a warm welcome for the parents wherein she discussed the changes to the education system brought by the K-12 program being applied this school year. She said that St. Dominic College of Asia is one of the competent school’s here in Cavite. The holistic foundation and quality education offerings.

Followed by the introduction of the faculty members of the Basic Education level then the orientation of the parents occurred afterwards. Ms. Sharmin Dianne M. Bulaklak, Preschool coordinator and Mr. Winterson  C. Ambion who were the ones who  discussed thoroughly the Dynamics, achievements, expectations, rules and regulations of the school for both levels.

The Basic Ed faculty and the other members of SDCA academic council attended the event.

The parent’s orientation for both levels ended with a closing remark by Basic Ed Principal with words of gratitude.
