SIHTM holds Junior Professional Summit

With the theme “Risk and Crisis Management in the Hospitality & Tourism industry,” School of International Hospitality and Tourism Management held their 8th Junior Professional Summit at Sofitel Philippine Plaza Hotel, Oct. 3.


There were a series of talks from respectable speakers in their field. Dr. Marita Andaman-Rillo, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, discussed about Psychology in the Workplace, and Ambassador Rosalinda Tirona, International Relations Officer, who served as the Plenary Speaker, talked about the Overview of the Risk and Management in the Industry of Hospitality and Tourism. As for the Presentation on the Risk and Crisis Management, Mr. Jojo Valenzuela of Canadian Tourism and Hospitality Institute discussed about Food Service Industry; Chef Jake Enriquez from Star Cruises talked about Cruiseline Industry; Mr. Mark Rañada of Sofitel Philippine Plaza tackled about Lodging Industry; Ms. Maria Loribel Marco from Philippine airlines go through the Tourism and Airline Industry. Afterwards, Dr. Elsa Chico, the Program Chair of Tourism Management Program, Presented the Plaque of Appreciation to all speakers. Then, Prof. Jennifer Yap, Officer in Charge Dean of SIHM delivered her Appreciation message.

The final part of the program was the year level presentation where nine contestants competed for the recognition. The presentations of the groups where nine contestants competed for the recognition. The presentations of the groups were based on Hollywood movies. KSHM1 A’s Titanic was declared the first place followed by United 93 BSTM2A and San Andreas respectively. The program concluded with the awarding of winners and followed by a fellowship.

ADC presents Nag-iisang Panalangin

SDCA President, Dr. Gregorio A. Andaman Jr., with his siblings Dr. Marita A. Andaman-Rillo and Emeriteria Andaman-Sagala witnessed their family story on stage through the theater play of Association of Dominican Communicators entitled “Nag-iisangPabalangin” at the Studio Theater, November 22.


Nag-iisang Panalangin focused on the love story of Don Gregorio and Doña Dominga Andaman, simply Gorio and Inggay.

Their love bore fruit with six children who became professionals in different fields and build a hospital and a school as a tribute to their mother.

When asked why they chose the “Nag-iisang Panalangin” as a title, Stephanie Palpallatoc said “Actually kasi panalangin talaga nila Gorio at Inggay na maging mabuti yung lagay ng mga anak nila kahit wala na sila. Tsaka kasi based from APO Hiking Society Song” (Panalangin).

AB Communication Students Erl John Lacman and Jewelle Juanengo Portrayed the role of Gorio and Inggay while James Patricio (Potenciano), Sarah Manila (Marita), Jennica Tolentino (Emerita), Eman Domingo (Monte), Sharmane Isidro (Lina), and Michael Abarro (Jojo) as the Andaman siblings.

Ms. Emerita Andaman-Sagala gave her remarks after the play. With emotions still flowing, she congratulated the actors for their performance.

“Nag-iisang Panalangin” will conclude their show on the last day of the Foundation Week, Nov.28.

SDCA@13 : Blazing for Excellence

With the theme “SDCA@13 : Blazing for Excellence”, St. Dominic College of Asia (SDCA) officially opened this year’s Founding Anniversary with astounding presentations from the Basic Education Department held at SDCA Grounds, November 23. .


Present in the said Event were Dr. Marita Andaman-Rillo, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Dr. Gregorio A. Andaman Jr., SDCA President, Ms. Emeteria Andaman-Sagala, Board of Trustees, and Ms Ma. Arlene V. Coronado, Basic Education Principal, and Mr. Jonathan Velustria Sta. Ana, Student Affairs and Services Director and the Chairman of this year’s Founding Anniversary.

Students from the preschool, primary and intermediate units had their Class Presentation in the morning and the junior and middle unit students had their Theatrical Speech Choir presentation.

For the class presented their own dance numbers with popular musical hits from the 90’s, from Michael Jackson, Westlife, Backstreet Boys, The Corrs, Ricky Martin, Britney Spears and many more. Each section had also prepared their costumes props to complement their chosen themes.

The winners were awarded after each units performed.

Grade 9 Juan Castañeda bagged the championship for the Theatrical Speech Choir.

BMLS dominates Dominican Dance Showdown

Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science (BMLS) hailed this year’s Dominican Dance Showdown Champions Defeating 11 other academic organizations, November 25at St. Dominic College of Asia (SDCA) Grounds.


Mr. JV Mitchel and Mr. Odi Majaba, who are both House of Styles members, and Ms. Samantha Ayrra Pariñas, SDCA’s External Marketing and Promotional Advocate and a skilled dancer as well served judges.

Bachelor of Science in Accountancy (BSA), Bachelor of Science in Physical Therapy (BSPT), Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Management (BSHM), and Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (BSBA) also stood out winning second, third, fourth, and fifth, respectively.

The victors of this dance showdown will receive points for their organization for the annual Student Pasiklaban.

First Placers will accumulate 100 points, second placers 80 points, third placers 60 points, fourth placers 40 points, and fifth placers 20 points.

Dominican Dance Company (DDC) spearheaded the event with the leadership of DDC President Jerwin Rabanzo.

Basketball team, Finance Admin Basketball team won against Team Faculty with a score of 82-69 while St. Dominic Medical Centre (SDMC) team ruled the court with a score of 87 against the outsource employees, RME, leaving 66 points during the opening game of Andaman’s Cup 2016 at SDCA Skyline last November 24, 2016.


The opening ceremony started with a parade of athletes together with their muses. Along with Finance Admin and SDMC, the competing teams were Faculty, Outsource Employees, and RCVJ Mr. Jayson Alvin Virata, Director for Admin Supports Services, officially opened the basketball cup by delivering his welcome remarks. “Play is the only way in highest intelligence of humankind can unfold” he said. The oath of sportsmanship was led by Mr. Louie I. Rabia, one of the rosters of SDMC. All team captains gathered in the center for the ceremonial toss together with Mr. Virata.

In the first game, Finance Admin ruled the court by making jump shots and scored. Former basketball player of Dominican Red Pikemen, Mr. Vince Commandante is now a roster of the Faculty team.

SDMC finished the basketball cup with a 21-point lead making the Outsource Employees failed to catch up in the last quarter.

The School of Health Science Professions (SHSP) will be conducting a "Skill Fair" open to all students under Allied Health program on July 16-20, 2018, from 8:00AM-5:00PM.

What you should know about Leptospirosis?

Leptospirosis
is a bacterial infection transmitted by many animals, such as rodents and other vermin. Waste products (e.g., urine and feces) of an infected animal, especially rats, contaminate the soil, water, and vegetation.

Cause
Leptospira spirochetes bacteria

Mode of Transmission
Ingesting contaminated food or water or when broken skin or open wounds and mucous membrane (eyes, nose, sinuses, mouth) come in contact with contaminated water (usually flood water) or soil (Incubation period of bacteria is 7-10 days.)

Signs and Symptoms
  • - Fever
  • - Non-specific symptoms of muscle pain, headache
  • - Calf-muscle pain and reddish eyes in some cases
  • - Severe cases resulting in liver involvement, kidney failure, or brain involvement (Thus some cases may have yellowish body discoloration, dark-colored urine and light stools, low urine output, severe headache.)
Treatment
  • - Take antibiotics duly prescribed by a physician.
  • - Early recognition and treatment within
  • - 2 days of illness prevents complications of leptospirosis, so early consultation is advised.
Prevention and Control
  • - Avoid swimming or wading in potentially contaminated water or flood water..
  • - Use proper protection, like boots and gloves, when work requires exposure to contaminated water.
  • - Drain potentially contaminated water when possible.
  • - Control rodents in the household by using rat traps or rat poison and maintaining cleanliness in the house.

FIGHT THE BITE STOP DENGUE

PHILIPPINE HEALTH ADVISORIES

Dengue fever and dengue hemorrhagic fever

- are acute viral infections that affect infants, young children, and adults.

Cause

- Bite of an Aedes aegypti mosquito infected with any one of the four dengue viruses.

Mode of Transmission

- Transmitted by a day-biting mosquito called Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus (These mosquitoes lay eggs in clear and stagnant water found in flower vases, cans, rain barrels, old rubber tires, etc. The adult mosquitoes rest in dark places of the house.)

- Signs and Symptoms

- Sudden onset of high fever which may last from 2 to 7 days.

- Bite of an Aedes aegypti mosquito infected with any one of the four dengue viruses.

- Joint and muscle pain and pain behind the eyes

- Weakness

- Skin rashes

- Nosebleeding when fever starts to subside

- Abdominal pain

- Vomiting of coffee-colored matter

- Dark-colored stools

- Difficulty of breathing

Treatment
  • - Do not give aspirin for fever.
  • - Give sufficient amount of water or rehydrate a dengue suspect.
  • - If fever or symptoms persist for 2 or more days, bring the patient to the nearest hospital.
Prevention and Control

- Follow the 4-S against Dengue:

  1. Search and Destroy
    • - Cover water drums and pails.
    • - Replace water in flower vases once a week.
    • - Clean gutters of leaves and debris.
    • - Collect and dispose all unusable tin cans, jars, bottles and other items that can collect and hold water.
  2. Self-Protection Measures
    • - Wear long pants and long-sleeved shirt.
    • - Use mosquito repellant every day.
  3. Seek Early Consultation
    • - Consult the doctors immediately if fever persists after 2 days and a rash appears.
  4. Say Yes to Fogging When there is an Impending Outbreak or a Hotspot
