New leaders take their pledge

New sets of officers and members of St. Dominic College of Asia’s accredited student organizations had their Oath Taking Ceremony held at SDCA’s Multi-purpose Hall for this year’s Student Organization Accreditation and Recognition Ceremony, Aug 22.


Present in the said event was Dr. Nilda W. Balsicas, Vice president for Academic Affairs, Mr. Jonathan Velustria Sta. Ana, Director of Student Affairs and Services, Prof. Ronald Tomines, Community Outreach and Extension Officer and Prof. Apolonio Silva, Student Discipline Coordinator.

“It’s not really success that matters in the world because most of those successes don’t really make the people happy.” Dr. Balsicas said during her welcome remarks. She also said that what we need are people who can actually hear people and people who are lovers of people.

“Be an instrument of the core values of St. Dominic. Be an instrument of good deed. Nandito kayo para gumawa ng tama. Nandito kayo para gumawa ng kakaiba” she added. The Oath of Leadership took place followed by awarding of certificates of accreditation.

Dr. Balsicas together with Prof. Silva awarded the certificates of accreditation to the different student organizations startin with the non-academic, academic, and institutional organizations. The presidents of the five Most Accomplished Organizations of the previous academic ear was also present in the event to receive the award of their respective organizations under their term. Ms. Allysa M. Cruz, received the top one most accomplished organization award for LaboratoriumDuces followed by Ms. Ma. KC Lyn Joy Ignacio for Alliance of Future Hospitality Managers, then Mr. Laudimer Hingada for Red Concepts, Ms. Rubielyn Acosta for Global Educators Guild and Ms. Liza M. Mesiona for Dominican Junior Philippine Institute of Accountants.

Then, Prof, Tomines discussed about the upcoming community outreach activities such as the Gawad Kalinga project, tree and mangrove planting to encourage the Dominicans to be more active, more dynamic and to soar high this academic year. The event was hosted by Mr. Rico J. Ramas, CCSC immediate past president. The singing of the SDCA Hymn concluded the ceremony.

Student orgs ascend

Department of Student Affairs and Services accredited 28 student organizations for Academic Year 2016-2017 including the newly formed Bio Core Council, Dominican Pikemen Varsity Organization, and Youth for Christat SDCA’s Multi-Purpose Hall, August 22.


The student organizations accreditation and recognition acknowledged new generation of leaders.

After a year of preparation to get accredited, Mr. Alberto Jr. L. Tan, Bio Core Council President, finally received the Certificate of Accreditation as they are now one of te academic organizations.

Then, for the first time, athletes of SDCA established their mother organization named as Dominican Pike Varsity Organization. Their president, Mr. Genesis Pedrasta, member of the SDCA Men’s Volleyball team, represented their organization during the Oath-taking Ceremony and was the one who accepted the cerficate for their organization.

YFC was also accredited with the presence of their president, Jhon Carlo Monleon of Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science.

SDCA participates PTT Sibol

Dominicans joined PTT Philippines Corporation as they support the government’s National Greening program through a three-year reforestation mission dubbed as “Sibol: Re-Greening Marikina Watershed” at San Ysiro Elementary School, San Jose, Antipolo City, Rizal, Aug. 14.


A total of 500 people 15 of which came from St. Dominic College of Asia volunteered to plant trees this year. Volunteers plant 15,000 indigenous and fruit bearing trees. Imelda Schweighart, Ms Philippines Earth 2016, along with the executive officers of PTT also participated in the planting. The project aims to help rehabilitate the area which is now called the Upper Marikina River Basin Protected Landscape.

According to Sukanya Seryothin, PTT Philippines President and Chief Executive Officer, the tree planting is their way of promoting the protection and preservation of the environment which is part of their advocacy under the guidance of their parent company in Thailand, the PTT Public Company Limited The program involves a three-year commitment to plant 50,000 indigenous and fruit-bearing trees in 100-hectare portion 25, 125.64 hectare IMRBPL that spans the city of Antipolo City to the municipalities of Barasm Rodriguez, San Mateo, and Tanay all in the province of Rizal.

Subsequently planting 15,000 seedlings this 2016 in 30-hectare portion of the sheltered landscape, PTT will plant 35,000 seedlings more in the next two years. The activity was implemented by PTT in commemoration of the Birth Anniversary of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit of Thailand, a known environmental advocate together with That King Bhumibil Adulyadej.

Dominicans prepare for “The Big One”

In accordance with the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council’s campaign in preparing for what they call “The Big One”, St. Dominic College of Asia conducted an announced earthquake drill, July 27.


Everyone in SDCA participated in the drill. Since the earthquake was expected to be 7.2 magnitude earthquake, everyone will be affected wherever they are.

SDCA Students occupied the Bacoor Boulevard formerly known as Molino Boulevard as the assembly area for the drill. According to Mr. Noel Manandas, transportation and general services officer who spearheaded the event, this will the safe area for the students and staffs and employees if the disaster happens.

He also said that the drill is doable during the disaster itself but there are still things to improve. The drill aims to promote a culture of preparedness among Dominicans for a possible movement of the West Valley Fault.

BMLS wins back-to-back SLC elections

Aina Regina Acosta won as the successor of Allyssa Cruz for being the new elected President of the Student Leaders Council during the meeting held at Doña Dominga Andaman Hall, August 1.


Acosta and Cruz are both from LaboratoriumDuces, the official organization of Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science.

The other officers elected were Samantha Leigh Ocampo of Pharmacy Collegiate Council as Vice President, Ma. Gelli Anne Escober of the Gateway Group of Publications as Secretary, Daisie Ann Herrera of Junior Philippine Institute of Accountants as Treasurer, John KervinPiquero of young Executive Society in the position of Auditor and Engelbert Reyes of Association of Computer Talents and Specialists as Public Information Officer.

Student Leaders Council is the official organizations of St. Dominic College of Asia.

In support to the advocacy of Nestle Philippines to gain funds for the “Help Give Shoes” program that will help the poor children to have running shoes, St. Dominic College of Asia joined the 40th Annual Milo Marathon at the Mall of Asia Grounds, July 31.


Volunteers from the National Service Training Program students ran five kilometers along with Central College Student Council officers and The Gateway Group of Publications Editorial Board members. Celebrating its 40th year, Milo Marathon continues to evolve in furthering its mission of building champions.

SDCA started to join this run on 2009, seven ears of seeing how Milo marathon made a hige difference to the lives of aspiring athletes since its inception. There were five categories for this years’ marathon 3k, 5k, 10, 21, and 42k.

Apart from being a breeding ground for local talents, the marathon has also become a platform that empowers children Nationwide.

SDCA celebrates World Teacher’s Day

St. Dominic College of Asia through the Central College Student Council and other accredited student organizations spearheaded the World Teacher’s Day 2016: Education for 21st Century last October 5 at the Al Fresco Hall.


The program started with a thanksgiving mass, followed by the registration at the Information Center where the teachers had their photos taken and received a token of courtesy from School of Business and Computer Studies organizations and AB Communication for the photobooth.

School of International Hospitality and Tourism Management students provide a free breakfast for the teachers at the GregDom Lobby.

The Dominican Dance Company showcased a dance number followed by the opening remars of the Vice-President for academics and Reasearch, Dr. Nilda W. Balsicas

Psychology Society facilitated the raffle while CCSC led the awarding of Most Liked Teacher which was won by Prof. Emilie Dizon and Prof. Sunny Uba both from SASE.

The traditional offering of flowers and pinning ceremony followed while the SDCA Tagintinig and Combancheros Dominicanos performed a song number which served as tribute for teachers. Education students also paid tribute to the Basic Education Teachers.

The School of Health Sciences Profession organizations managed the wellness hub which consist of glucose testing, massage, blood pressure checking, and free tea and ginger drink. They also offered hook game which provide joy and excitement to the teachers.

Alcantara crowns as Ms. SDCA-PHISMETS

Ms. Aneley Abeer Alcantara, from Bachelor in Medical Laboratory Science, crowned as the new Ms. St. Dominic College of Asia Philippine Society of Medical technology Students at SDCA Skyline, Oct. 16.


With her undoubted wits, beauty and poise, she bested her 9 fellow BMLS candidates.

Aside from the crown, Alcantara also won special awards such as Ms. Denim, Ms. Olive C, and best in Talent.

Four other candidates also shared limelight with Alcantara: First runner-up Ms. Maricar De Leon won Best in Production Number and Best in Long Gown; Second Runner-up VieniceMalabanan won Ms. Photogenic, Ms. Placenta, and Best in Filipiñana; Ma. Kathleen Joy Manandas won the third runner-up title; and Fourth runner-up Reycee Ann Kalinisan won the Charity Award.

Special judges including Bb.Pilipinas candidate number 40 Christianne Ramos, Mister Universal Ambassador Netherlands 2016 Cas Winters, Fashion Stylist Domz Ramos, and Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Batangas President Aldo Bacasa were present in the event.

Ms. SDCA-PHISMETS is a prerequisite for the Philippine Society of Medical Technology Students pageant exclusive for Medtech students.

Literato to kick off its 9th year

The Gateway Group of Publication embrace the Multiple Intelligences conept for Literato 9 with the theme “Mga likas na kakayahan at talinong taglay, sa siyam nauri sila’y bibigyang buhay.”


The competition will focus on the 9 Multiple Intelligences where the participants will give their own interpretation in different categories.

Essay writing was the new category for this year’s contest. Together with Essay writing, Poetry writing, Pagsulat ng Tula, Pagsulat ng Maikling Kwento, Short Story Writing, Comic Strip Drawing, Pagguhit ng Komiks, Graphic Illistration, and Digital Photojournalism will be included in the said competition.

Participants from different academic organizations will compete for a rank judged by Vice President Internal of Cavite Association of Tertiary Press Advisers Dr. Lydia Villanueva, TG 2013-2014 Editor-in-Chief Mr. John Michael Samuel, Mr. Kim Joshua Dañom School Paper Adviser of Benedictine Institute of Learning, and Mr. Rhoel Ilagan, Internal Auditor of St. Dominic College of Asia which is also a photography hobbyist. Literato RemIX will be held at Doña Dominga Andaman Hall on October 1. Registration will start at 8am at the information center.

St. Dominic College of Asia’s Nigerian students celebrate their country’s 56thIndependence Day from their colonizer, the United Kingdom, October 1 at SDCA Grounds.


In 1960, Nigeria gained independence from UK as a Commonwealth Realm.

It states that Nigeria is a sovereign state and UK can only have a connection with them in their own volition.

Their freedom from the European colonizer also ended the vulgar slavery.

This celebration has been a custom every year due to their increasing population in SDCA.

“I feel excited to be alive to witness this day and I am glad we’re growing.” Khadijat Jimohn, International Students Association Financial Secretary, said.

The program ended with the symbolical slicing of cake resembling the joyous flag-raising happened way back in 1960.
